About this site
Welcome to The Redoubt. This website offers a mini guide to the many historic stone castles and redoubts scattered around the British Isles.
Many of these can be found along the coast, and there are spectacular sites such as Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland, dating from the 14th century, or the Needles Old Battery, on the Isle of Wight, built in Victorian times in response to the threat of a French invasion.
Inland there are major monuments stretching from the Roman Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, to the ruined Norman castle of Clough in County Down, dramatic Corfe Castle in Dorset, and romantic Bodiam Castle in Sussex.
They say an Englishman’s home is his castle, and that is echoed by the wealth of historic structures scattered around this island. From early Norman fortresses, to grand stately homes built by Sir Edward Lutyens, castles remain incredibly interesting places to visit.
